It's totally film noir.
I was just about to comment on how I liked all those little houses when I saw your author’s comment. I really like these characters and their stories. Are they supposed to live in any specific city/region or is it made up/vague on purpose?

it's somewhere in recession-era America, far from any notable big cities, small town in the Rust Belt/Carolinas where the buildings are all pretty old. Speedy's house and the other houses on his street look like they're from anywhere between 1935-1960. I reference architecture from a lot of different places in the country so there's probably no clear match
